Why become an actuary
- Strong pay from the start
- Actuarial work pays well early and keeps paying as you qualify. In London, published salary bands put student actuaries with 0–4 exams at around £33k to £50k. Two to five years after qualification, published bands run from roughly £80k to £155k, depending on the practice area. Use our salary calculator to compare the ranges by exam progress, specialism and location, with every figure linked back to its source.
- Your exams translate into pay rises
- Many actuarial employers link salary progression to exam progress as well as performance and experience. That gives you a visible route from graduate salary towards qualified-actuary pay, while your employer will usually fund your professional exams and give you study leave.
- One qualification opens several career paths
- General insurance, life insurance, pensions and investment work can feel like very different careers. You could work on insurance pricing, claims reserves, pension schemes, capital models, investments or transactions while building towards the same actuarial qualification. That gives you room to find the part of the profession that suits you.
- Good pay without giving up your life
- For many people, this is one of the biggest attractions. Actuarial work can offer a more predictable working week than some other high-paying finance careers, while still giving you technical work, responsibility and strong long-term earnings. Busy periods vary by employer and team, but the career can offer an unusually attractive balance between pay, progression and lifestyle.
Find actuarial roles that are open now
Actuarial graduate schemes, internships and placement opportunities open at different points throughout the year, although many of the largest graduate intakes open in autumn. Some employers recruit on a rolling basis and can close once places are filled.
Our tracker brings UK actuarial opportunities into one place, with links straight to the employer so you can see what is open, what is coming up and where to apply.
What you are up against
Actuarial graduate roles are competitive. A large number of applicants can be reduced to a much smaller group through online tests, video interviews, assessment centres and final interviews.
The table shows how quickly the numbers can narrow. The exact conversion rates vary by employer, but the point is simple: doing well at each stage matters.
| Stage x | lx | qx |
|---|---|---|
| Apply | 140 | 0.57 |
| Video interview | 60 | 0.67 |
| Assessment centre | 20 | 0.60 |
| Final interview | 8 | 0.88 |
| Offer | 1 | n/a |
Applications per UK graduate vacancy: 140 in the ISE 2025 recruitment survey. The later-stage conversion rates are illustrative and will vary by employer. Acttuary is designed to improve your preparation at each stage.
lx = candidates remaining at the stage. qx = the illustrative proportion who do not progress.
What you get
Learn what the work actually involves
Understand the work behind the job titles before you sit in an interview. Learn pricing, reserving and capital in general insurance; life tables and present values in life insurance; scheme funding and buy-outs in pensions; and the investment ideas behind asset-liability work. The aim is not to memorise definitions. It is to understand enough to explain what the work is and why it matters.
Practise the technical skills
Work directly in Excel, Python, R and SQL from the browser. Build spreadsheet models, write and run code, answer marked exercises and see worked solutions. You learn the tools by using them rather than just reading about them.
Prepare for the application process
Learn how actuarial applications work, what employers test at each stage and how to prepare for interviews and assessment centres. The guidance is kept current as employers and recruitment processes change.
Learn from people who have done it
Acttuary is built by actuaries who have sat the professional exams, applied for actuarial roles themselves and worked in the profession. The courses are written around the questions applicants actually need answered before they start the job.
